We are on “School Half-Time” (just a little football analogy). That’s right homeschool Mamas … one semester down and one to go! Unbelievable — 2017-2018 school year is half over already!
It is that time of the year to get the principal, administrator, teacher and students together for a conference. (Hehehehe! That means my husband and I evaluate how the year is going for each one of our children.) As long as we diligently worked on the curriculum plan that was set up at the beginning of the year, each child should be about halfway through every subject they were assigned. Nothing too magical about that, right?
In public school, students get awards for their hard work when it comes to grades, attendance, etc. I think it is important for my homeschoolers to be rewarded also. As I evaluate their workbooks, I pass out grades and put big smiley faces/stickers all over their excellent work. We rarely move on until my child/student has a full understanding of the lesson so their workbooks are very colorfully decorated with praise.
Another enjoyable award is when the “book fairy” visits my children and leaves new books or money under their pillows for reading above and beyond their school assignments. I allow my “Littles” to turn on their reading lights and read if they cannot fall asleep. Basically, this is a perfect excuse for them to stay up past bedtime so the “book fairy” visits often.
Our homeschool co-op also has a celebration at the end of each semester to demonstrate all the children’s hard-work. This is an opportunity to invite family and friends to celebrate each child. Many of their projects are on display and they get opportunities to perform plays, speeches, etc. on stage. (Check out my baby playing a doctor on stage. Cute, huh?)
“School Half-Time” is a perfect opportunity to evaluate our children spiritually, physically and academically. It is important that my husband and I see growth in all areas — even for my son, Bear, that started public school this year for football purposes.
We officially changed Bear’s status to being “home tutored” now. 🙂 He still sits around the table and does all his studies and homework with his brothers and sisters. He does devotions with the family and is one of the coaches this semester at our homeschool co-op. Homeschool is in his heart — he just cannot quit us. 😉 We do as much as we can together as a family so I jokingly say that we are all part of the public school now just because Bear is.
Bear did amazing his first semester of high school. All A’s (shhhh, there is a minus on one of those A’s — he left room for improvement next semester. 🙂 ) He is representing homeschool nicely as he ranks second out of 343 in his class and has a 3.9 GPA. All the praise goes to our Lord Jesus Christ because He is the one who strengthens our family.
Philippians 4:13 NKJV
“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”
For the Love of “School Half-Time”,
